Dale Chihuly Heads to Hong Kong

Whitestone Gallery Hong Kong presents CHIHULY Hong Kong, the latest solo gallery exhibition by American artist Dale Chihuly.
CHIHULY Hong Kong showcases a series of artworks created over the artist’s 50-year career. The exhibit will be available for viewing from 2 March through 15 April at Whitestone’s new H Queen’s location.
The body of work curated for CHIHULY Hong Kong demonstrates the artist’s desire to stretch the limits of his chosen media and his ongoing experiments in light, space and form. Highlights of the exhibition include Drawings, which reveal the artist’s exuberant hand; Baskets, a series which recently celebrated 40 years; delicate and fluid Seaforms; the richly-colored and contrasting hues of Macchia;Venetians, which were inspired by Art Deco Venetian vases; Ikebana, inspired by the Japanese art of flower arrangement; Persians, a celebration of wild asymmetry and colour; and Chandeliers, which are comprised of hundreds of blown glass forms.
Whitestone Gallery H Queen’s exhibition space is designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who creates a minimalistic and dynamic atmosphere. Chihuly’s artworks will bring forward an extraordinary experience in the newly opened space, inviting audiences into a wondrous kaleidoscopic world, where all can enjoy a miraculous feast of color, light and form.
Dale Chihuly is known for revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art. Over his 50-year career, he has become known for his iconic glass sculptures, but glass is just one of the media he employs to realize his vision – he also draws, paints and sculpts using other materials. Chihuly is renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world, in historic cities, museums and gardens. Dale Chihuly’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass. Major exhibitions include Chihuly Over Venice (1995-96), Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem (1999), de Young Museum in San Francisco (2008), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2011), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (2012) and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, Canada (2013.) Chihuly Garden and Glass opened at Seattle Center in 2012.
