A haven from the bustling tourist center of Cancun, the hotel offers tranquility and authenticity

While we would never be so ungrateful to complain about free-flow Champagne or decadent four-course meals, after recently spending a week or so at all-inclusive resorts in bustling Cancun on the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, we were slightly relieved to head south and discover what neighboring Riviera Maya had to offer. Sandwiched between Mexico’s Caribbean coastline and Highway 307, about 30 miles south of Cancun, is a luxurious haven that maybe people drive past each day without even knowing it is there. Turning off the highway, a small lane, flanked by lush tropical foliage, leads you to Belmond Maroma.

The tone for your stay is set at check-in. A small and unassuming white stucco structure with a thatched roof oozes a laid-back vibe, yet attentive service (we had a margarita in hand literally 30 seconds after arriving) gives a five-star feel.

Built by Mexico City architect Jose Luis Moreno, Belmond Maroma opened in 1995. Built from local materials, including palm, bamboo and stone quarried in the Yucatán’s old Hispanic capital, the 25-acre beachfront portion of the 500-acre property is dotted with two- and three-storey buildings that are linked by stone walkways through the jungle. In 2002 the resort was acquired by Orient-Express Hotels which in 2014 changed its name to Belmond Ltd and the hotel was renamed Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa.

The rooms are spacious and luxurious without being overdone. We enjoyed our stay in an oceanfront one-bedroom suite. Sweeping terraces offered endless sea views along with a private plunge pool. Spread out in front of the bungalow was a private beach featuring sun chairs, lounges and a private palapa spa area. In the suite itself was an expansive living area and large bathroom complete with indoor and outdoor showers and a soaking tub. The suite even comes complete with a personal gym. A beach bag, kaftan and sarong were also on hand for use throughout the stay.

Upon rising in the morning, enjoy a cup of coffee which has been placed outside your suite by your butler at your time of choosing, then head to the airy El Restaurante for a delicious and filling breakfast (the chilaquiles are to die for). While away the rest of the day lounging near the pool, which is surrounded by lush foliage; being pampered at the Kinan Spa; or exploring the area on two wheels courtesy of complimentary resort bicycles. The resort can also arrange for a large range of activities including sailing, golf and snorkelling. Wrap up your day with a candlelit dinner on the beach with a couple glasses of wine and delectable dishes served up by chef Gabriel Kolofon before drifting back to your plush four-poster bed dreaming about what paradise has in store for you tomorrow...
