Awash with celebs and lovers of the great outdoors, the best-known of Colorado’s ski resorts is a special place
At this time of the year, Aspen is flooded with hordes of well-heeled travellers from all corners of the globe who come to sashay down the slopes and sip après-ski cocktails while enjoying a roaring fire. And who wouldn’t want to do that?

But those who only venture to the Centennial State to ski are very seriously missing out because Colorado is, some say, not even at its best during winter, which is to say that it is stunning year round thanks to jaw-dropping scenery and every kind of outdoor activity.

However, when we visited the ultra luxe resort town, we were quite possibly the least active of the temporary residents. We took refuge from the wintry weather at Hotel Jerome and quickly discovered that between the beautiful accommodation on offer, the pampering spa and Netflix DVDs delivered to your room, it is just as easy to have a relaxing vacation in Aspen as it is to have an active one.

After checking in, we sampled the chlorophyll-spiked water on offer in the lobby that is said to help visitors acclimate to the higher altitudes, before finding our room with the assistance of a cowboy hat-clad bellboy. The complimentary mini-bar, full of healthy and delicious goodies, many of which are made locally, was a nice touch. Bags unpacked, we headed down to Auberge Spa for our 80-minute Sanctuary of the Mountains body treatment.

We practically floated out of the spa and headed towards the heated outdoor pool and hot tubs, which sit in a beautiful courtyard right off the garden terrace. Suitable relaxed, we strolled around the rest of the 93-room property.

The beautiful brick structure was built in the late 1800s, and is referred to by some as the crown jewel of the town (the hotel’s marketing team for one). Managed by Auberge Resorts, it should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the brand that every detail was near perfect, from the cashmere curtains and the burnished-leather bed frames to the original Chippendale chinoiserie bar and rugged leather furniture found in J-Bar (a favorite haunt of Hunter S. Thompson in the 60s and 70s). Other food and dining options includes Prospect Restaurant, where Chef Rob Zack serves up contemporary cuisine in an equally contemporary setting; and the Living room, an expansive area where guests can mingle and people watch over small plates and drinks from the lobby bar.
