Seven days, 447 miles and countless hours in the saddle and your backside is in no doubt going to go to need a bit of extra attention. If there is one piece of cycling attire that shouldn’t be skimped on it’s bottoms. Quality, well made shorts and bibs will provide adequate coverage and comfort for long distances and hours clocked in the saddle.

We’ve been testing out the Black Label Women's Shorts ($129) from Voler and have found that between the high-compression spandex and high density foam pads the shorts live up to their promise. And they’re made in the USA to boot.

Made from Forza high-compression spandex, the shorts feature flat seams, PowerGrip leg bands and a multi-density foam chamois that is a god send on longer rides (read more about the stats here).

They are designed to provide comfort for six - eight hour rides (we will definitely be sporting these come Stage four of RTR!) and the compression helps improve blood circulation and performance while the fabric provides breathability.

For men, there is the 16 Caliber Men's Bib Shorts ($119). The Caliber collection is said to be all about visibility, performance, and style, but the main thing we noticed was the overall comfort level both in terms of snugness and the flat seamed shoulder straps that are made from Titano mesh.

Admittedly, we are new to bib shorts and we aren’t riding for eight hours, yet, but the overall feeling was just how superior these are to cycling shorts.

A simplified version of Voler’s Black Label bibs, the Caliber bib shorts are tight but not uncomfortable, at least for the rides we are going on at the moment. Made from lightweight yet compressive Milano fabric, the shorts also have the brand new Orion chamois which is made from high density foam and does a pretty good job.

Something we liked was the PowerGrip leg bands which kept the shorts securely in place for the duration of our rides thanks to the textured backing. Designed for rides lasting more than six hours, we will update this review when we reach that point!
