Now that Ride the Rockies is less than three months away (gulp), it’s a good idea that riders begin to decide which gear they’ll be bringing along for the week. We’ve heard horror stories about new bibs rubbing the wrong way, loose shoes causing blisters or (worst of all) helmets that don’t fit correctly causing safety issues. So to help riders avoid these pitfalls, we’ll be testing out some cycling gear from top brands and sharing our honest opinions and reviews.
As anybody who has spent a decent amount of time in Colorado will tell you - the weather here is finicky. Snow is almost just as likely in June as it is in January, and so being prepared for very cold weather and even snow during the ride is imperative - as is preparing for blistering hot temps.
Gear that allows for versatility is key, which is why we love The One Premium helmet ($169.99) from Bollé. First introduced last year, the helmet comes in two sizes, 54-58 cm and 58-62 cm, and was engineered with versatility in mind. This year Bollé has rolled out two new colors for this model, white with either mint or orange accents.

The helmet’s best feature is probably the option to go from winter to summer conditions in minutes. Two removable aero shields allow you to get better airflow with a total of 31 vents while the light, padded lining is great for summer conditions. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, the helmet also comes with an ultra warming fleece lining which velcroes into place and keeps ears nice and toasty even when the temperature plummets (we give it the Colorado winter approval). You can control airflow and temperature to a degree by using just one or other of the shields.

Other practical features include a removable visor, a ‘sunglasses garage’ where you can ‘park’ your glasses when not in use, a safety QR Code which gives anyone who scans it pertinent information on the rider (for EMTs and the like), and a red LED light which clips into the back of the helmet and offers both a continuous or flashing setting. An easy to reach click-to-fit system has a knob that allows you to tighten or loosen the helmet to fit your head perfectly, and with a bit of maneuvering we were able to comfortably fit a ponytail between the shell and click-to-fit system, which is always something we look for (long hair plus sweaty neck equals miserable ride).
Pros: Offers the ultimate in versatility, basically a five-in-one helmet.
Cons: Aero shields are on the bigger side and may not fit comfortably in a jersey meaning you would need a bag if you wanted to take them.
Best for: Riders who dabble in on and off road cycling and live in climates with four distinct seasons.
