There was a time when Malaysia didn’t have a single St. Regis property, but that changed within a month as the luxury accommodation doyen opened the doors to two new luxury properties.
April 6 2016 saw Langkawi’s first new luxury resort in a decade open on one the archipelago’s main island.
Like buses, you wait for one and then two come along at once. The St. Regis Langkawi is located inside UNESCO’s First World Geopark and is the brand’s 37th property worldwide and the first - but not the last - in Malaysia.
Hoping to redefine luxury hospitality on the island, the the resort is set amidst a nature lover’s paradise yet is incredibly accessible as it is only a 30-minute drive from Langkawi International Airport. The hotel has a classical contemporary aesthetic and offers an island getaway without compromising. Indoor spaces blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape thanks to thoughtful decor and architecture. The resort’s mansion house brings together European and Middle Eastern with soft blues and beiges and Islamic arches, mashrabiya-inspired screening, and large private courtyards.
An all-suite luxury resort, there are four overwater villas and 85 luxuriously suites, with each one being distinct in design with paintings by well-known local artists. In addition, all of the suites offer unobstructed views of the sea from spacious terraces.
Six restaurant and bar venues mean there is plenty of choice when to comes to meals, including modern French cuisine infused with Asian and Middle Eastern flavors at L’Orangerie, as well as the Gourmand Deli which offers a selection of homemade breads and pastries. Then there is Kayuputi. Serving Asian-inspired haute cuisine, it was designed by renowned landscape architect, Bill Bensley and evokes an over-water beach house that might be owned by an art collector - indeed it is home to a specially curated antique collection featuring century-old wooden doors and windows repurposed from the Dutch embassy in Yangon.

The brand’s signature Iridium Spa offers a wide range of massages and well-being treatments in a tranquil and inviting environment. There is also a salon, an infinity swimming pool, a natural-saltwater lagoon, and a well-equipped athletic club.

Just over a month later and around 250 miles south of Langkawi, the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur opened its luxurious doors.
With a world-Renowned art collection, a three-Michelin star chef, and plenty of tech gadgets, the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur looked set to make a dramatic impact on the hospitality scene in the Malaysian capital. The brand’s 38th hotel, the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur is part of ONE IFC and is a few minutes from KL Sentral train station which means Kuala Lumpur International Airport is just a 30 minute express train ride away.
Perhaps strategically located to appeal to business customers in addition to those looking for a luxurious stay, the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur was inspired by luxurious Manhattan apartments that offer fantastic views of the city. With 208 rooms that start at 678 square feet, the property boasts the largest guestrooms in the city, the largest being the Royal Suite which offers an incredible 4,000 square feet with private elevator access, an outdoor terrace, a show kitchen, separate his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes as well as an en-suite massage room and gym.

The hotel is also home to an art collection that includes a monumental 11.5 foot horse sculpture by Fernando Botero, and the specially commissioned diptych “Grace Thunders,” a pair of 16 foot hand-etched leather murals by Mark Evans that depict a polo charge.
Dining and drinking at any St. Regis property is always a very enjoyable experience, and that is no different at the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur.
Six restaurants and bar venues include Taka by Sushi Saito, three Michelin-starred chef Takashi Saito’s first restaurant outside Tokyo, Ginza Tenkuni which offers Edo-style tempura, and The Brasserie which delivers a European café experience during the day and transforms into a contemporary French-Mediterranean bistro in the evening. For post-dinner drinks the The Astor Bar and Decanter serve exquisite cocktails and carefully selected wines by the master sommelier, as well, of course, as the signature Bloody Mary which at the St. Regis Kuala Lumpur is the "Assam Boi Mary" made with calamansi juice, Asam Boi, and Sarawak Black Peppers. There is also the Crystal rooftop bar and the Drawing Room for afternoon tea.
An Iridium Spa, fitness center, yoga room, and outdoor swimming pool offer several ways to further relax or to work off some of those calories.
