The Marker, Dublin

Ireland’s Fair City, Dublin is home to centuries of history, a somewhat disproportionate number of literary greats, great food, and of course Guinness. Dublin caters to nearly five million tourists a year and has places to stay and things to do to suit all tastes and budgets, including some very nice places indeed.

The Five-Star Marker Hotel is located in the city’s docklands, which includes "Silicon Docks," the city’s tech quarter and home to Google, Facebook, and Twitter. The Docklands area stretches across the River Liffey from Talbot Memorial Bridge eastwards to the 3Arena. A formerly derelict area, the docklands were subject to a huge regeneration project that resulted in a new and vibrant quarter of the city. The Marker is located in Grand Canal Square which is also home to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre which regularly plays host to plays, ballet and concerts. With a capacity of 2,111 it is the largest theatre in Ireland.

The architectural concept at the Marker aimed to recreate a coastal form that had been eroded over time. The erosion formed a series of public spaces on the ground floor of the hotel with guest rooms hanging overhead. The facade of the building is fully glazed giving a sense that the hotel opens out into Grand Canal square. A 67-metre cantilevered bridge structure that has no intermediate supports gives the Marker the largest open lobby in Dublin.

Part of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Marker has 166 guestrooms, 14 corner suites, four luxury suites, two luxury one-bedroom suites, The Roche & The Schwartz Suite and the Marker Presidential Suite.

Crisp linens and muted colours give a sense of calmness, with splashes of color that give a contemporary edge. The Marker has all of the furnishings and fixtures that you would expect from a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

The hotel keeps dining relatively simple with a concept that promises “unfussy plates of honest, good food served in relaxed, upscale surroundings.” Locally-sourced ingredients pervade the menu while the dishes themselves are thoroughly contemporary.

Modern furniture, including the Panton chair, in private booths as well as banquette seating offer privacy. There is also Le Drunch, the Marker’s Sunday late lunch, and the Rooftop Bar & Terrace is great for post-dinner drinks. Even if you aren’t a guest at the Marker, the Brasserie is a good place for a pre-theatre meal.

Remember the cronut? The croissant-doughnut hybrid invented in New York that Time magazine named as one of the 25 Best Inventions of 2013? Well, the Marker sells them. As surprising as it sounds, boxes of four cronuts can be yours for €10. There are a limited amount every day and they are available from 8 a.m. at the Marker Bar. If you want to know more, including how this even came to be, you can email them at their dedicated cronut email address: cronuts@themarker.ie.

The Marker features a calming and contemporary spa along with an indoor pool and fitness center. The hotel also offers a courtesy chauffeur service each day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m within a three mile radius of the hotel.
