Part of a small portfolio operated by Nira Hotels & Resorts, the Nira Caledonia in the Scottish capital is one of just four properties, the others being the Nira Alpina in Silvaplana St. Moritz, the Nira Montana in La Thuile Aosta Valley, and the Shanti Maurice in Mauritius.

Situated among the cobbled streets of Gloucester Place in Edinburgh’s New Town, the Nira wears the boutique tag well. Luxury and intimacy come together with a friendly but professional staff, good food and comfortable, but not pretentious, lodging.

Occupying two Georgian townhouses, the 28-room hotel, or at least a part of it, was once the home of well-known literary figure John Wilson. Acquired by Nira Hotels in 2011, it underwent a refurbishment before opening in January 2012. Original cornicing and plasterwork and other Georgian features were preserved while contemporary furnishings give the Nira a very modern yet luxurious feel.

Each of the 28 rooms has been uniquely designed yet they retain typical Georgian features such as high ceilings, dado rails and Georgian sash windows. Touches of luxury include antique rugs, ornate gold mirrors and modish armchairs.

The nine suites have many unique and striking features including chandeliers, private access to a garden, Jacuzzis, waterfall showers, views over the city’s botanical gardens, contemporary art, and even a chesterfield sofa. Perhaps the most opulent is the Bellevue Jacuzzi Suite. The four-room hideaway has a six-foot square Jacuzzi tub encased in mahogany as well as a separate seating area with a full-size gilt mirror.

Meals at the Nira are a very Scottish affair, whether that is traditional dishes such as haggis or more international offerings that utilise the exquisite local produce that is, as far as possible, farmed, caught, raised or bred in Scotland - beef comes from the Scottish Highlands, rare-breed pork and lamb are from the Scottish borders and fish comes from Highland lochs and the North Sea. Blackwood’s Bar and Grill even has the “Taste Our Best “accreditation that ensures ingredients are of Scottish provenance. See here for the Blackwood’s Bar and Grill menu at the time of publishing.

Walking distance to Princes’ Street, the main artery of the city, the Nira Caledonia is located in Edinburgh New Town, making the hotel perfect for a luxurious escape without actually being too far from anywhere. Be sure to allow time to stroll around the local neighborhood Stockbridge, where a collection of trendy cafes and boutiques line the streets. A morning run along the Water of Leith is a must as is a nearby visit to the Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh.
