Nestled in Vail Valley, at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, is the ultra-luxurious ski-in ski-out Ritz-Carlton, Beaver Creek. The year-round lodge offers adventure junkies a range of all-season sports from skiing and snowshoeing to mountain biking and hiking, and as with any good luxury resort, there is a luxury spa to match.
While the spa at the Ritz-Carlton, Beaver Creek offers all kinds of treatments, it tends to cater to those looking for a way to soothe sore muscles rather than those looking for a haven of relaxation and peace, as do many of the spas at mountain resorts in Colorado. With this in mind, it is worth adjusting your expectations if you are used to the luxurious adornments or quiet tranquility that you get at, say, ESPA at The Ritz-Carlton Macau. Luxurious but functional, the treatment rooms are a little smaller than some spas we have been to and they can be quite bustling, but if you’re looking for a way to unwind between mountain biking and a martini, you’ll find just what you need here.
Guests of both the spa and the hotel can utilize the facilities all day, so be sure to arrive before your treatment and plan to stay after. We especially loved the steam room which had a strong vapor to help clear stuffy or blocked noses. The coed grotto allowed for some down time with friends or partners with a waterfall that feels fantastic on upper backs. Iced cucumber washcloths and fruit-infused water were nice touches, even if they are somewhat expected at these upscale resorts..
The Bachelor Gulch Signature Massage is designed to leave guests energized and refreshed for the day. We settled on light pressure as we hadn't particular exerted ourselves in the build up to our visit. Expert hands delivered a near perfect massage with consistent pressure. Don’t be afraid to ask for a more firm massage if you need to knots kneaded out. We loved the fact that you can choose between five different lengths (30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes) and you can add a short or long massage to any other treatment to make your experience as long and luxurious as you like. Coming off a trans-Pacific flight, we were thrilled to make our treatment a little longer to soothe sore shoulders and backs.
As indulgent as luxury resorts can be, it is nice to work up a bit of a sweat. If this sounds like you, check out the Mountain Spa Mornings treatment. This fantastic four-hour itinerary kicks off with either a snowshoe trek or hike through the mountains (depending on the season) led by the resort’s naturalist. That is then followed with a private yoga session before finishing with a 60-minute signature massage. Mountain Spa Mornings are available for two to four guests.
If you are feeling the effects of the altitude (which is not to be underestimated), spend 20 minutes in the oxygen lounge to up the health benefits and help get acclimated to the altitude.
