Mid-autumn festival is on the horizon - which means that moon cakes are popping up everywhere we look. Gone are the days of double egg yolk cakes thrown in a gaudy red box. Talented pastry chefs are whipping up delectable moon cakes (think chocolate fondant!) and creative minds are crafting elegant boxes that you’ll want to hold on to well past the holiday. While there is certainly no shortage of these treats to be found all over Hong Kong and Macau, we’ve narrowed it down to a few of our favorites.

Quite possibly the most impressive, and one of our favorites, the moon cakes from Grand Hyatt Macau feature bright and colorful boxes adorned with patterns that depict flying butterflies or a peacock spreading its plumage. Inside it gets ever better, with three flavors on offer: salted egg custard, taro with lotus paste and (our favorite) chocolate fondant.

Flavours include white lotus paste with bird’s nest; supreme custard; red lotus paste with egg yolk; white lotus paste with egg yolk; green tea with red bean paste; preserved ham and assorted nuts. The moon cakes are encased in a red leather bag which can be repurposed as a wine holder (big plus!).
