Make -up artist, photographer and founder of NARS Cosmetics François Nars sheds some light on his inspiration for the Nars Spring 2016 Collection, why he chose Mariacarla Boscono for the campaign and his top picks for beauty products this spring.
Can you describe the Spring 2016 Color Palette?
At first glance, the colors look very fresh and pretty because of the soft shades like rose, apricot, and mint, but then you see the bolder shades, like the midnight blue and the warm red—the palette is really well balanced between the softer shades and the darker, more sophisticated colors. There’s also a mix of warm and cool tones that, in a way, mimic the progression of winter to spring.
What was the inspiration for the campaign visual?
It was old covers of fashion magazines from the 1950s—they were a major source of inspiration. The clothes, the accessories, the makeup—it’s all so glamorous and very dramatic. The models were flawless—Jean Patchett, Suzy Parker, Audrey Hepburn— they are stunning. I wanted to capture a similar feel for the campaign image. This look references that period with the lined, winged lids, and pink lips.
Why did you decide to photograph Mariacarla Boscono for the campaign?
I’ve worked with Mariacarla before—she is stunning and an amazing talent. She has a unique and unconventional look. She is also a total chameleon, she becomes the character in the campaign, brings her to life. We can imagine who this woman is and what she might be doing.
What are your favorite products and shades in the collection?
The Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows are really versatile because they can be used wet or dry and that makes them really great for spring. You might apply one with a wet brush earlier in the season when you want a more dramatic look and then switch to dry for a sheer application when it’s warmer. The icy mint and blue are really beautiful wet or dry. I also love Hammamet Duo Eyeshadow. The matte beige and bronzed rose colors look amazing on their own and together, their textures—a matte and a metallic—play really beautifully on the skin. I am very into matte makeup right now.
