Macau is aglow with holiday lights and stunning Christmas trees abound offering a festive feast for the eyes. We’ve rounded up our favorites places to admire the holiday decorations this season.

Photo: The ‘Enchanting Eco-friendly Christmas’ trees at the Grand Hyatt
Quite possibly our favorite Christmas trees are at the Grand Hyatt (above), where their ‘Enchanting Eco-friendly Christmas’ features dozens of trees that have decorated with material found in the hotel, cutting down on the need to waste new materials (you can read more about it here). Another favorite is at The Ritz-Carlton. Tastefully decorated Tiffany blue Christmas trees with Tiffany boxes underneath are scattered around the hotel.

One Central, located right next to the Mandarin Oriental, features a 10 meter-tall musical Christmas tree which is made of 32 panels of stained glass. Every 30 minutes the tree features a light and music show complete with musicians and dancers. If you’re looking for a staycation (or gift ideas) this winter, One Central has teamed up with the Mandarin Oriental to offer a package (starting at MOP2,888) that includes one night accommodation in a guestroom or suite, buffet breakfast for two at Vida Rica Restaurant, a hotel credit of MOP 1,000 which can be used for dining or spa, and a One Central Macau shopping voucher valued at MOP 1,000. That’s certainly something we would like to wake up to on Christmas morning!

Photo: Grand Praca in the MGM offers a Christmas Market and tasteful decorations
The MGM has beautiful decorations this year, which giant baubles and a Christmas market to add to the festive atmosphere. Stalls offer goodies and treats as well as local designers offering great gift ideas. We like the offerings from the members of Art For All Society, especially the series of ancient maps designed by Erik Fok The market is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and later on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

The Venetian will feature a 3-D light and sound show which is projected on the giant façade of the hotel every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 3 (the outdoor entrance has even been given a light dusting of artificial snow). You can countdown the final few minutes of 2015 as the show gives way to a New Year’s countdown. Inside The Venetian, a 12(ish)-meter sparkling tree is lit up in St. Mark’s Square which is decorated with millions of Swarovski crystals.

If you’re willing to brave the cold head outdoors to check out the Macau Light Festival. We’re partial to the arch in Senado Square, which lights up at night (read more here). On Christmas Eve visit Largo da Companhia de Jesus by Ruins of St. Paul’s for carols from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. and while you’re there pop into Macau Soul for a tummy-warming tipple (read more about our favorite bars to enjoy some holiday cheer here). In Taipa the Winter Christmas Village features 50,000 poinsettias and a 10 meter high 3-D LED Christmas ball and 9-meter high Christmas tree, on display until Jan. 3.
