For over 50 years, Aston Martin has been the sports car of choice for James Bond. It was in the third Bond film, “Goldfinger” that saw the Bond get behind the wheel of an Aston Martin for the first time. While the novel put the spy in an Aston Martin DB mark III, it was the newer DB5 model that was chosen for the film. Two years later Bond was back and so was the Aston Martin in the fourth 007 film “Thunderball.” Bond’s 1969 outing in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” saw the Aston Martin DBS feature, and 20 years later, when Welsh-born Timothy Dalton made his debut as James Bond in “The Living Daylights,” the spy was reintroduced to the classic car, this time the V8 Vantage - in both volante and coupe versions. They were both of course customized with Q’s gadgets which in this film included outriggers and tire spikes. Pierce Brosnan’s seven-year run as the sexy secret agent saw Aston Martins made it into two films, the DB5 returned in “Goldeneye” and the V12 Vanquish in “Die Another Day”.
In 2006 the franchise got rebooted with Daniel Craig playing Bond in “Casino Royale.” The DBS came with him, as did the DB5, which made a special appearance in the film, making it the first film to feature two Aston Martin models. “Quantum of Solace” put Bond back in the driver's seat of the DBS during the film’s opening, and in Craig’s penultimate film, “Skyfall,” Bond was reacquainted with his first Aston Martin model, the DB5. The latest film “Spectre” saw the Aston Martin DB10, which was built specifically for the film, eject Bond before ending up at the bottom of the River Tiber.
For James Bond fans in Macau, head to the Galaxy Macau’s Opal Lobby where an Aston Martin DB9 GT Bond Edition will be unveiled on Nov. 6 and kept on display until the end of the month. Priced at around HK$3 million, the car has all kinds of features including gun barrel embroidery on the seats. There’s also a special Bond Edition start-up screen and 007 logos throughout. It’s pretty quick, as you might expect, going from zero to 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 294 km/h (183 mph).
