When residents of Macau need a short break from the city it’s more than likely they jump on a ferry for a couple of days in Hong Kong. While we are obviously big fans of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is also a very convenient one-hour ferry ride from Macau and also offers visitors plenty of options for a weekend getaway. We visited recently and stayed at the JW Marriott Shenzhen Bao’an, one of the city's newest luxury hotels.

Just a 15-minute taxi from the ferry terminal, the hotel is in the rapidly developing Bao’an District of Shenzhen and when it opened in February this year it became the first luxury hotel in the area. While it might seem to be in a slightly inconvenient location for sightseeing, it is in fact very well connected to the city by way of the Shenzhen Metro. Located on the Luobao Line, a few close tourist destinations, including Happy Valley Amusement Park and Window of the World, are a short 20 minute trip. The hotel also offers a free shuttle service which connects the hotel to the metro and a couple of shopping malls.

The lobby is very open, with high ceilings and abundant natural light. All 354 rooms and suites are decorated in cool tones with contemporary furnishings and modern materials as well as some tasteful art on the walls. Floor to ceiling windows in the rooms and suites allow for abundant natural light with Aromatherapy Associates bath amenities, and all the standard offerings you would expect from a luxury hotel including two 42-inch HDTVs.

We spent the weekend in an executive suite. At nearly 1,000 square feet, it offers a large living room with a beautiful sofa and chairs as well as a desk, a guest bathroom, a separate wardrobe area, a king size bedroom and a beautiful marble bathroom with a large tub, separate shower and toilet complete with heated seat.

Our suite also came with access to the Executive Lounge located on the 28th floor (open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. daily) which offers afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapés, desserts and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. The lounge offers views of Qianhai Bay from the sitting room or city views from the dining room (a particularly interesting building is the brand new Bao’an District Library which is located across the street from the hotel).

While there is a lot of construction going on in the area, a lack of nearby restaurants means you may find yourself tethered to the hotel at meal times, which is not really a problem as Shenzhen Kitchen, the hotel’s all day dining eatery, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. There is also a lobby lounge with a self-playing piano which offers drinks, snacks and an afternoon tea.

The hotel’s fitness and spa facilities are, as you might expect, top notch. While the 24 hour gym itself is well equipped, we felt the free weight area could do with a bit more space. There are indoor and outdoor pools, a therapy pool, and locker room facilities including a cold water plunge bath, steam room, sauna and ice fountain. Spa treatments are available from WATERFALL spa and wellness.
Towards the end of the year a new restaurant will open on the top floor. Bayview will offer Chinese and International cuisine with panoramic views of the bay.
