The Harnn Heritage Spa at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort was touted as one of the world’s best spas when it opened last year. At the inaugural World Spa Awards, which coincidentally were held at the resort, that confidence was vindicated when it won World’s Best New Hotel Spa and, obviously, Vietnam’s Best Hotel Spa.

Set in a private lagoon, the spa offers guests treatments that are unique to the region including their signature experience Journey of Marble Mountains, which utilizes the area’s famous marble in the two-and-a-half-hour steam, scrub and massage treatment.

Architect Bill Bensley, a stalwart of spa design, is the man behind the treatment rooms which, interestingly enough, were modeled after the Quonset huts that were used by US forces in the Vietnam War.

Featuring natural light, soothing music and marble showers, the treatment rooms and villas are an interesting nod to the turbulent history of Vietnam, although we urge you not to think about it when you are getting a treatment.

In fact, guests will likely notice that the whole resort pays a sort of homage to the rich history of Vietnam, which includes the stunning French colonial-style interior at Pierre Gagnaire’s restaurant La Maison 1888.

The InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort itself opened three years ago in an idyllic location at the heart of the Son Tra Peninsula nature reserve. All 200 rooms offer guests sea views with five-star amenities and facilities.

There may not exactly be a dearth of spa award ceremonies, but, according to the organizers, “the World Spa Awards was developed in reaction to overwhelming demand from the spa industry for a programme that was fair and transparent; a programme with a mission to serve as the definitive benchmark of excellence, and to help to foster a new era of growth in spa tourism”.

At the award ceremony, Macau’s Six Senses Spa at MGM Macau won Macau’s Best Hotel Spa 2015, which is no mean feat in very competitive Macau.
