Since 2007, through an odd use of congressional power, September has been deemed Bourbon Heritage Month in America. As lovers of bourbon we at Ladybird of Leisure are using this somewhat tenuous link to justify sharing a few delicious bourbon cocktails and where to get them in Macau.
The Ritz-Carlton Bar and Lounge

The newest bar to join the ranks of Macau’s watering holes is The Ritz-Carlton Bar and Lounge. Located on the 51st floor of the hotel, the stylish bar pours a good range of high quality spirits alongside excellent views of Macau. Bourbon cocktails include the classic Old Fashioned (MOP98++ made with bourbon, bitters, orange peel and sugar) as well as the bar’s signature cocktail, the Improved Vionnesse (MOP118++) a delicious sounding dessert-like concoction made with bourbon, tonka beans, dark chocolate and coffee panna cotta.
If you prefer your bourbon straight or on the rocks, the The Ritz-Carlton Bar and Lounge has three bourbons on offer: Eagle Rare Bourbon (MOP148++) and W.L. Weller Special Reserve (MOP108++) from Buffalo Trace; and Knob Creek (MOP98++), a small-batch bourbon from Beam Suntory that has been aged at least nine years.
Open from 10am to 1am from Sunday to Thursday; from 10am to 2am Friday and Saturday; and from 2:30pm to 5:30pm for afternoon tea.

Bourbons available at Vida Rica includes the hand-crafted Woodford Reserve (MOP80+); Maker’s Mark (MOP90+) and the standard and unimpressive Jim Beam (MOP70+).

Bar Cristal

The jewelry box-like bar in Wynn Encore may ostensibly be one for the ladies, but the bar is as well stocked as any other. The bar’s signature cocktail, and one that nods firmly in the direction of Wynn’s Las Vegas roots, is the Sinatra Smash. Made with bourbon, blackberries, sweet & sour mix, vanilla syrup, and Crème de Cassis, the ingredients are shaken with ice after the fresh blackberries have been muddled. Strained over crushed ice, the Sinatra Smash is served in a lowball glass garnished with mint leaves. Upgrade to Basil Hayden’s bourbon for an even smoother drink, or better still just order a Basil Hayden’s on the rocks.
Open from 5pm to 1am Sunday to Thursday and from 5pm to 2am Friday, Saturday and public holidays

A whisky lover’s dream, The Macallan Whisky Bar & Lounge offers several bourbons too and if you enjoy both try the “Around the World” flight (MOP388++) which offers five selections of both spirits, including Marker’s Mark and Yoichi, a 10 year Japanese whisky.
Open from 5pm to 1am Sunday to Thursdsay; and from 5pm to 2am Friday and Saturday

Bourbon Heritage Month has just started, so there is plenty of time to get out and try some masterfully crafted cocktails from some of Macau’s best bartenders. And remember the words of Mark twain when you think you may have had one delicious cocktail too many: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.”
