One of our favorite ways to celebrate anything in Macau is over a Sunday brunch with plenty of bubbles. Engagements, weddings, job offers: you name it, it can be celebrated with a Champagne brunch. So if you’ve recently tied the knot or have been offered that dream job, grab your friends and family and read ahead to see our top picks for Sunday brunches in Macau. Have we mentioned they offer free-flow Champagne?

Belon

This seafood and steak restaurant in the Banyan Tree takes guests on a trip under the sea at their quirky and upscale restaurant Belon. A small staircase leads down to a fetching white piano where you will be serenaded by the incredibly talented pianist and vocalist. Food wise, the selection is smaller than others we tried, but the focus of Belon’s Sunday brunch is very much quality over quantity, which they have certainly perfected. To kick off your brunch, try all three varieties of oyster on offer, which included Irish, French and Scottish when we visited. Next to the oysters is a small selection of seafood on ice as well as a few different salads. At the opposite end of the restaurant there is a barbecue section that offers grilled delicacies including USDA prime beef, lobster, Japanese pork, cuttlefish and lamb. The brunch also includes pan-fried foie gras and caviar, which was brought to the table by our server. The dessert station, among a few regular offerings, is where you can get ice creams as well as sorbets which are made instantly with the aid of canisters of liquid nitrogen. One of our favorite touches was the beverage trolley that was wheeled over at the beginning of the brunch, which offered Champagne, wine and juices. The wait staff are attentive and friendly, and helped make this a memorable experience.

Cost: MOP798+ per adult (12 years above), MOP238+ per child (4 to 12 years old)

Good for: The most sophisticated and classy out of the bunches we tried, it is ideal for anniversaries, wedding celebrations or when you’ve done something very naughty.

Details: Sunday from 11:30am to 3pm; for reservations call (853) 8883 6090

Rossio

Rossio Sunday brunch.jpg

We have tried (and loved) Rossio’s lunch buffet in the past, so were curious to see how the Sunday brunch would stack up. The interior is natural and calming, which is a must for a long, leisurely brunch. This visit, however, we chose to dine “alfresco” which (until November) gave us front row seats to Joana Vasconcelos’s art project "Valkyrie Octopus," which perhaps doesn’t evoke the serenity that Rossio’s interior does, but it offers an interesting view nonetheless. There were a large number of Western and Asian dishes with several different stations, including a carving station, a seafood bar with sashimi and sushi, foie gras, cheese and cold cuts, and a salad section.

On top of that, Rossio’s creative chefs serve up a few inventive and delicious dishes which include a cold asparagus salad with truffles, a slow-cooked egg and shaved Italian cheese; and fresh lobster pasta where the lobster is incorporated into the dough. A fairly new addition to Rossio is their herb garden on the roof which grows dozens of herbs that are used in the dishes. Be sure to save room for dessert as Rossio has a great selection, both in terms of quality and size. We tried a good range, but not even close to everything, including some delicious gelato from the dedicated bar (the coconut was incredible) as well as a few other nibbles from the dozens of cakes and pastries on offer. We finished off, as is customary, with some cheese and of course a few more glasses of Champagne.

Cost: 468+ includes free-flow Sangria, juice, mojitos and lemonade; add MOP100+ for free-flow Champagne, wine and beer for two hours; children under the age of 6 are free

Good for: Those with a sweet tooth and a penchant for Veuve Clicquot

Details: 11:30am - 3pm; for reservations call (853) 8802 2372

Belcanção

Belcancao offers something the first two don’t: the chance to wine and dine outdoors. It may involve shuffling in and out to fill your plate up, and you may have to be quick about quaffing your glass of bubbles before it gets too warm, but if the weather is fine we say go for it. The brunch features a very wide selection of dishes, which could explain why some weren’t as hot as they should have been. However, the dim sum from two Michelin-starred restaurant Zi Yat Heen more than makes up for it along with other dishes that are brought direct to your table, including seared foie gras bruschetta and grilled wagyu strip loin. You may opt for a straight up glass of Champagne or perhaps go for a classy Kir Royale (Champagne with crème de cassis), berry Champagne or lychee Champagne.

Cost: MOP688+ with Champagne, MOP588+ without Champagne

Good for: A mild day to take advantage of the al fresco seating and the chance to try Michelin-starred dim sum

Details: Sunday from 12pm to 3pm; for reservations call (853) 2881-8888

Bene and Portofino

Perhaps your celebration has to be of the sober variety (although we can’t think of too many occasions that wouldn’t allow you to have at least one innocent glass of champagne!) there are a couple of honorable mentions out there that encompass the lovely Sunday brunch without the bubbles (and the inevitable Monday morning hangover).

Although we can barely pronounce them, these Italian options have us looking forward to Sunday all week long.

Bene’s Stuzzichini Sundays offer guests plenty of Italian fare that includes barbecued meat, seafood, pasta, and of course tempting desserts. And if you just can’t possibly resist the temptation to quaff a few glasses of wine you can add free-flow wine, beer, soft drinks and juice for an extra MOP100+. Portofino's Abbondanza offers an alcohol-free Sunday brunch with a pretty unbeatable deal. There are soups, entrees, appetizers and desserts on offer. Both Bene and Portofino have patios should you feel so inclined to brave the summer heat or if it is one of those increasingly rare mild days.

Cost: Bene - Adults MOP458+; children (under 12) MOP229+ (throughout June Starwood Preferred Guest members who book at least 12 hours in advance can get a free child’s meal for every adult dining); Portofino - MOP298+

Good for: Sober celebrations or when you’re looking for a hearty fill of Italian cuisine

Details: Both Sunday brunches are offered from 11am to 3pm; for reservations at Bene call 853 8113 1200; for reservations at Portofino call (853) 8118 9950
