Le French May has been celebrating Gallic culture in Hong Kong and Macau for over 20 years. Growing from its inaugural event in 1993, it is now one of the largest cultural events in the region. Although it is a Hong Kong festival, there are a few offerings that make it to Macau. We have rounded up the best of Le French May in Macau.
To start there is a French-themed seafood buffet at the Grand Lapa’s Café Bela Vista. A great option for those not exactly au fait with French cuisine, the buffet will have a range of French delicacies on top of the regular seafood, salad, snacks and dessert offerings (adults MOP328+; children MOP164+). For reservations call (853) 8793 3871.
In honor of the Midi-Pyrénées region in the southwestern part of France, the MGM’s quintessential French restaurant Aux Beaux Arts is offering a three-course Le French GourMay menu (MOP488+) throughout May. Appetizers include Bayonne ham with Quercy melon (a specialty of the region) sorbet or warm Cabécou d'Autan goat cheese salad with Périgord walnut, red apple and confit tomato. Next up is aligot de l'Aubrac (a fondue-type dish of melted cheese blended with mashed potato) with grilled beef tenderloin with mixed green salad and truffle sauce, which will be followed by chocolate pavet with orange jelly and Quercy melon and saffron ice-cream to round off the meal. There will also be an option to pair each course with a glass of wine from the region (MOP60+ a glass). For reservations call (853) 8802 2319.
Le French GourMay at The Tasting Room is offering guests a gastronomic tour of France with a four-course menu (MOP1,088+) with optional wine pairing (MOP1,488+). The meal starts with egg and white asparagus, duck confit and burnt bread emulsion. This will be followed by artichoke soup with Cevennes onion cream before the main course of slow-cooked veal with spring vegetables. Ending the meal will be a dessert that uses the famous Agen prunes. For reservations call (853) 8868 6681.
For a more casual affair try neighboring SOHO for a couple of glasses of French wine and a brasserie style snack at any of the outlets (MOP188). Gold Coast Oyster & Seafood restaurant is also offering six French oysters and a glass of French white wine (MOP388). Craving some crème glace? Haagen-Dazs is offering buy one get one free on wine flavored ice cream. For enquiries or reservations call (853) 8868 6688. May 16th, 23rd and 30th from 6pm to 10pm.
Throughout May, Sky 21 in the AIA building is offering a four-course French menu that includes goose rillettes and duck liver with spiced bread terrine; vegetable soup with white bean, ham and homemade sausage; confit duck leg on cep fricassée; and apple croustade flambé with Armagnac. End your meal with a cocktail on the balcony, we recommend their take on the mojito which includes a few refreshing slices of cucumber.
For a different kind of feast head to the local outpost of French hotel chain Sofitel at Ponte 16 and IAOHIN Gallery as they co-host “Human Roots,” an exhibition of beautiful wooden pieces by French sculptor Mickaël Obrénovitch. The sculptures are crafted from old teak tree roots that were sourced from the Java rainforest.
