Photo: The Shine Spa at the Sheraton offers Feng Shui tailored treatments
If you’re looking for a way to start the Year of the Goat off Feng Shui approved, there is no better place than Shine Spa at the Sheraton. The spa has taken a unique approach to healing with their Shine Five Elemental Journey which offers treatments that correspond to your element, whether it be fire, earth, wood, water, or metal.
To begin, the guest is asked a series of questions on an iPad application to determine what their major and minor elements are. The questions range from your year of birth and favorite color to how you are feeling that day. After being presented with your major and minor elements, the therapists describe the corresponding treatments and you decide which treatment you would like. Earth, which was my major element, was represented by a mineral stone massage, which was designed to remove blockages along energy pathways. The therapy that represented by minor element, water, involved a rainstick massage to aid detoxification and regulate water metabolism. Tempted as I was to choose the rainstick treatment (who doesn’t love that sound?), I decided to choose the 60-minute hot stone massage (MOP924 + 5% tax weekday; MOP970 + 5% tax weekend).

The spa is inviting and peaceful, offering 15 treatment rooms and suites. The warming tones really help the relaxation process to begin. The changing rooms include a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi for pre-treatment relaxation, as well as a lounge to enjoy pre- or post-treatment with an offering of refreshing drinks. (Be sure to leave a message for the friendly and welcoming staff on the board available). The deluxe couples suite includes a jacuzzi, steam shower, bathroom, vanity and two treatment beds, with dark wood and ambient light throughout.
The treatment started with a foot bath before we laid face down on our treatment bed to being our elemental massage. This was my first stone treatment and I had no idea what to expect. The therapist applied red jasper, crystal, and hot stones to my back. They created soothing waves that rippled up and down my body. My favorite part of the treatment was when the therapist used the stones to massage essential oil over my back and arms before placing them in my hands. This process was repeated a few times, with hot stones replacing the cooler ones. After turning onto my back my stomach received the same treatment. After the treatments were over, we were invited to sit in the comfort of our suite and enjoy some tea and delicious homemade but healthy snack.
You might think that couples suites are designed for those in romantic relationships, but we urge you to try a mother/daughter treatment like we did, although it would work just as well for your girlfriends. With Mother’s Day on the horizon, it's a fantastic way to treat her on this special day, or any other day of the year.
