It’s three weeks into January. Take a few moments to reflect on how your resolutions are coming along. Perhaps you promised this year was going to be the year to eat better (if so, check out a great way to kick start that diet here) or maybe too much couch time in 2014 has urged you have a more mobile 2015. Either way, if your morning runs have started to taper off (we agree, it’s unnatural to wake up when it’s still dark) or your clubhouse gym leaves little to be desired, then read ahead for some great alternatives to get your sweat on.

First up is the fitness center at the Grand Hyatt. The reason we love this option, albeit pricey, is it includes time on the tennis court, along with access to the 40-meter outdoor heated swimming pool, lockers, steam room, freeze shower, and hot tub. You also receive personal training if you go with the annual or six month packages (four or one hour-long sessions respectfully) which is a great way to learn the basics for you workout newbies. All memberships include at least one fitness assessment as well as discounts at Isala Spa (the annual membership even includes a 90-minute Isala Signature Massage, perfect to alleviate that post-gym soreness).

The cost: Single membership will run you MOP7,000 for three months, MOP12,000 for six months, and MOP22,000 for the year. A family (two adults and two children) is MOP14,000 for three months, MOP24,000 for 6 months, and MOP44,000 for the whole year. Keep in mind that the benefits of each tier of membership varies, but all memberships include six hours of daily parking while using the facilities.

The details: Fitness center open from 6am to 12am; swimming pool from 6am to 8pm (winter) and 6am to 10pm (summer); tennis court 6am to 10pm; locker facilities 6:30am to 12am (Sunday to Thursday) and 6:30am to 1am (Friday and Saturday)

Health Club ???? 1.jpg

Photo: The gym at the Conrad Macau offers plenty of ways to get fit

If you opt for the Conrad Lifestyle Membership, you get two for one as it includes access to both the Conrad and Holiday Inn Health Clubs (we’ve used it - it’s spacious and very modern). Also included is use of the swimming pool, lockers, sauna, steam room and hot tub. Membership also includes fitness classes, a 15% discount on selected spa treatments and 10% discount on spa products at Bodhi Spa. And if you’ve worked extra hard, you can reward yourself at one of Conrad’s eateries, for which you get a 20% discount. Four hours free parking a day is included along with discounted entertainment tickets and a room upgrade on your next Conrad staycation.

The cost: Single membership is MOP1,800 a month, MOP8,800 for six months, and MOP16,000 for a year. If you can, get a partner to join you. Not only will it help motivate you to go more often, but it’s a better deal. Membership for couples is MOP2,800 a month, MOP14,800 for six months, and MOP28,000 for a year. If you would like the kids to come along (great for swimming in the summer) it will be an additional MOP500 a month, MOP2,800 for six months, and MOP4,800 for a year for each child. (Prices do not include 5% government tax).

The details: The health club is open from 6am to 10pm daily and the swimming pool is open from 6am to 8:30pm (May to October) and 7am to 7pm (November to April)

As all the above gyms are located in hotels (they tend to be less busy because who actually works out on vacation?) we’ve included an alternative. Perfect if you are especially in need of a little push. Or maybe your bank account is looking a bit light after all that post-holiday sale shopping? Either way, Urban BootCamp 853 will whip you into tip-top shape before you can say spande….

Run by Nuno Fernandes and João Braga, Urban BootCamp 853 was started in November 2012. Both Fernandes and Braga hold degrees in sports science and physical education and are certified personal trainers, which makes them ideal candidates to lead you on your path to fitness. “Classes consist of body weight based exercises combined with games, agility and running drills. It's an intense workout that suits all levels of fitness, which challenges your cardiovascular and muscular systems helping you getting in shape.” This is great when the classes are made up of people with varying fitness levels. The freedom to change your training session (each session is an hour) every week is a big draw too, along with working out outdoors. For optimal results, at least two sessions a week are recommended, but be sure you are getting proper rest between sessions and eating a balanced diet. There are sessions offered in both Macau and Taipa, making it very accessible.

The cost: The first session is free, but if you try it and love it then packages are available in five (MOP150/each) 10 (MOP120/each) and 15 (MOP100) session bundles which are good for three months.

The details: For an up-to-date training schedule you can contact Urban BootCamp 853 by emailing urbanbootcamp853@gmail.com or through their Facebook page here. Be sure to check out their next fun and challenge event which will be on February 7th (details here).
