If you have visited Macau recently, you have undoubtedly seen (and heard) the construction projects that are popping up all over the Cotai strip. All six of the major casino operators (Wynn, MGM, Sands, Melco-Crown, SJM, Galaxy) are engaged in building new hotels and Stephen Hung’s ambitious new endeavor Louis XIII is taking shape too.

Melco-Crown’s newest project, Studio City, has released details of their new property that should see its grand opening at the middle of this year. The cinematically-themed, art deco-inspired resort will deliver a one-stop opportunity to visitors offering accommodation, entertainment and - of course - gambling.

With pressure put on the casinos to offer more to tourists than gaming, Studio City is certainly contributing to the diversification of Macau by offering a slew of activities to those that don’t come to Macau just to play the tables (although this will still be a huge draw as there is room for up to 500 gaming tables in the resort).

To promote the new complex, Melco Crown selected Martin Scorsese to direct a short film featuring Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio which is set around a Studio City storyline. "The Audition" (with the alleged budget of US$70 million) will be premiered in its entirety at the launch of Studio City - although a trailer for the film was shown at a press event yesterday.

A close collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will allow Studio City to feature the studio’s characters and superheroes, which will include virtual-reality ride “Batman Dark Fight” and a 30,000 square foot Warner Bros. Family Entertainment Center where children will have the chance to meet popular characters of the production studio including Tom and Jerry and the Looney Tunes.

Perhaps the biggest entertainment draw will be “Golden Eye” a 130 meter ferris wheel, which will be the highest in Asia upon completion.

The Studio City Entertainment Center will host concerts, sporting events and theatrical performances with a 5,000 person capacity, and TV broadcasting studio, Studio 8, will allow guests to watch the filming of popular Asian TV shows.

The hotel will consist of two towers - Celebrity Tower and Star Tower - with approximately 1,600 art deco-styled rooms in total. Guests of the hotel will have a chance to laze about on the “Podium Deck Lazy River” - a jungle themed water ride located in the pool’s vicinity.

And of course there will be the shopping. The Boulevard at Studio City will offer visitors a chance to buy the latest fashion trends at one of the many luxury shops in the 300,000-square-foot mall.

An exact opening date has yet to be announced, but Studio City is scheduled to open mid-year.
