Guide to New Year's Eve in Macau

Christmas hasn’t even arrived yet, but it’s already time to start thinking about New Year’s Eve. Whether you’re looking for a tame, elegant meal out or you want to party until the sun rises on 2015, we’ve gathered a few great ways to say so long to 2014 and welcome the New Year in style.

The Mandarin Oriental is offering a sedate and relaxing dining experience to bid farewell to 2014 with an eight-course meal (MOP1,488 + 10% service charge). The set menu features smoked Royale Cabanon oyster with celery and apple escabeche; Brittany blue lobster in saffron rock fish bisque; poached monkfish with geoduck carpaccio; and Kagoshima beef striploin. For an extra touch of decadence add the wine pairing option.

Wynn’s Italian restaurant Ristorante il Teatro will host a New Year’s Eve gala dinner that will kick off with a glass of champagne before delving into a five-course feast (MOP1,528 + 10% service charge). They are also offering a vegetarian set dinner (MOP868 +10% service charge) so you can kick-start that healthy eating plan you have always talked about.

On the other hand, if you would like to get one last buffet under your belt before your New Year’s resolutions takes effect, try Cafe Esplanada’s New Year’s Eve dinner buffet (MOP548 + 10% service charge). With two seatings - 6pm to 8:30pm and 9pm to 12:30pm - be sure to drop that fork at the stroke of midnight if you choose the latter.

If you find yourself sleeping or supping at the Grand Hyatt Macau on the 31st, then pop over to the lobby at 11pm for free entry to their Grand Countdown. Guest DJs will have you dancing your way into 2015 as twenty thousand red balloons drop on to revelers at midnight. If you aren’t a guest of the hotel or dining at the restaurant, you can purchase a ticket (MOP350) which includes a glass of champagne.

Festiva at The Galaxy Macau is offering a dinner buffet on New Year’s Eve (MOP688 + 10% service charge, which includes entry to the countdown party) and New Year’s Day (MOP588 + 10% service charge). After filling up on a wide-range of gastronomic treats, head over to Galaxy's indoor East Square from 11pm to 2am for the Golden Glitz Countdown party (MOP288 which includes a glass of champagne or house pour), where you will be entertained by DJ Yellow and Korean pop singing dance group The FLIT. You will also have the chance to win a gold coin in a lucky draw.

Gosto is offering a four-course set menu on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (MOP588 + 10% service charge for dinner and entry to countdown party and MOP488 + 10% service charge respectively). Partridge pastries with caramelized figs and port wine sauce will start the meal, which will be followed by monkfish rice with clams, shrimp and Portuguese black pork ham, and then sous vide lamb loin with Portuguese olive paste, carrot puree and onion. The meal will be rounded off with cherry soufflé with ginjinha (a liqueur made by infusing ginja berries [aka sour cherries] in alcohol and sugar) ice cream.

The Venetian is hosting a New Year’s Eve gala (MOP1,000) starting at 8:30pm. The menu will feature five dishes including lobster salad with gold flake Champagne jelly, jumbo scallop, caviar and sea asparagus; sous vide pheasant with foie gras, sour cherries and port wine reduction; Champagne sorbet with fresh mint; and wagyu baked in smoked Maldon sea salt with truffle jus, gratin potatoes and glazed asparagus. For dessert guests will be served chocolat framboise with organic honey ice cream, peaches en Chartreuse jelly, a red velvet macaron and seasonal berries as well as coffee or tea. After dinner work up an appetite by dancing along to the hits of KC and the Sunshine Band and indulge in midnight snacks while you ring in the New Year in an alcohol-induced state of happiness from all you can drink wine and beer.

At Portofino, chefs will be serving up a six-course menu (MOP888 + 10% service charge) with a wine pairing option (MOP1,088 + 10% service charge). Courses include Zarskaya oysters with caviar; lobster and salmon terrine with chervil creme fraiche and microgreens; saffron tagliolini with seared jumbo scallops and crab meat; and veal sirloin with white truffle, port jus and roasted winter vegetables.

If you think 2015 will be your lucky year, you may want to head over to Altira’s 38 Lounge where live music and lucky draws will feature as part of their New Year countdown party (MOP388 + 10% service charge and 5% tax). The ticket price includes two glasses of bubbly so you can ring in the New Year in a Champagne-induced haze.

New Year’s Eve at StarWorld’s Temptations offers diners a five-course menu (MOP888 + 10% service charge) with dishes that include lychee wood-smoked duck breast with red wine peaches; Alaskan crab legs with avocado and mango salad; seafood and pumpkin risotto; baked beef tenderloin with cheese in basil and red wine sauce; and chocolate mousse with rocky road ice cream.

Live bands and DJs will keep guests who attend the celebration at StarWorld Hotel’s Whisky Bar entertained from 9pm to 5am. If you can muster the energy to drag yourself out of bed on New Year’s Day, a unique experience will await those who head over to Hotel Okura. Start your day off with a traditional Japanese New Year Osechi set lunch (MOP480 + 10% service charge and 5% tax) at Yamazato from 12pm to 2:30pm. Afterwards watch the Kimono Ambassador team from the hotel as they perform a traditional dance and sing the Soran Bushi - one of the most famous traditional songs in Japan. The performance takes place in the main lobby at 3:30pm, after which spectators will have the opportunity to get a more hands-on experience at 4pm as they have the chance to make mochi by swinging a large kine (a sort of mallet). There will also be other Japanese New Year performances.
