There is no denying that the main lure for visitors to Macau is the casinos, but not just for the gambling, as the newly released 2015 Michelin guide to Hong Kong and Macau proves.

Michelin stars are awarded based on five key criteria: The quality and compatibility of the ingredients, the preparation and the flavors of the dish, the chef’s personality as revealed through his or her cuisine, customers value for money, and consistency over time and across the entire menu. To be awarded one Michelin star means that specific restaurant is very good in its category. Two stars signifies that restaurant is worth a special detour, but to be awarded three stars means a special trip just to eat at that restaurant is warranted.

A mere 11 restaurants in Macau have received the honor of at least one Michelin star, which according to the guide means that these eleven restaurants in Macau are not only the best in the region, but among some of the best in the world. Out of these eateries, all but one are located inside a casino-hotel. We have rounded up these ten restaurants in Macau that have stars.

If receiving three Michelin stars really is worth a special trip, then visitors that journey to Macau just for the food can visit the Grand Lisboa and kill two birds with one stone. Not only does the Hotel Lisboa Complex have two 3-starred restaurants, but also two 1-starred restaurants, making it the only place in the world where you can eat so much Michelin-approved food under one roof.

In Chinese culture, eight is considered to be a lucky number, and that luck has certainly worked it’s magic inside the Grand Lisboa. The Eight, having just received three Michelin stars for their second year running, was the first Chinese restaurant in Macau to hold such an honor. Serving up contemporary Cantonese dishes, such as puff pastry with river shrimp and steamed whole crab and shrimp with stewed rice and shark fin in lotus leaf. There is also an extensive wine list and a selection of tea.
