Take the Road to Prosperity at the Spa at Encore

With so many high-end hotels in Macau offering award-winning spa experiences, deciding on a spa treatment can sometimes be a trying task. If privacy and luxury are at the top of your list, then the 1-6-8 treatment at the Spa at Encore is certainly the one to choose.
The propitiously named massage has a multitude of significance. One treatment, six hands (from three seperate therapists) and eight treatment steps form the 168-minute (yi-liu-ba) treatment, which in Chinese translates to “road to prosperity”. This treatment, coupled with full use of your own personal suite, guarantees the ultimate in discretion and opulence. The attention to detail is what makes Encore Tower so impressive, and the spa is no exception.
From the doors inlaid with mother of pearl, to the citrine crystal throughout, no expense has been spared, which my partner and I noticed from the moment we entered. Dark wood and warm browns and golds decorate the lobby and hallways creating a very relaxing environment.
The warm color scheme extends to the suites too, with marble floors and leather chairs that are meant to evoke feelings of sensuality and relaxation. The couples suite is divided into three sections, the first of which is the oval relaxation room, which includes his and her vanities (complete with luxury toiletries) a closet, private toilet, and a lounging area.
Having just lounged around in the pool for a few hours, we declined the offer to enjoy the facilities and started the treatment right away. Passing through the second section of the suite (which holds the steam room, sauna and hydrotherapy aroma bath) we were lead to the third section, the dark and inviting treatment room, which was just about illuminated with sensual candle light.
To start the lengthy treatment, two therapists work in unison with a dry brush massage to help promote circulation followed by a full-body Himalayan salt scrub. We showered to rinse off the scrub and had a brief aromatherapy steam to open our pores. After emerging from the steam, it was clear the scrub had done its job as my skin was smoother and softer.
Once back in the treatment room, a full-body massage awaited us, with four hands stroking and kneading away tension and stress. Just when you think it cannot possibly get more blissful, another therapist steps in, upping the pleasure and enjoyment, as feet, head and hands are worked into a state of relaxation for the remainder of the treatment. With so many hands caressing your body it’s hard to keep track of what is going on, but as one therapist is performing a reflexology foot massage, another is giving a soothing facial and the third is making your hands soft and silky with a paraffin hand treatment.
Not one that can sit still for too long, I entered the spa worrying I would feel bored and tired after the nearly three-hour treatment, but I didn’t once find myself wondering if it was nearly finished.
When it finally was over, and we were enjoying our tea and fresh fruit in the relaxation area, I was thinking how my next measly 60- or 90-minute treatment will pale in comparison.
