Housed inside the MGM Macau is the Moroccan-inspired Six Senses Spa. With ten treatment areas and dozens of different treatments, ranging from reiki and Ayurveda to Chinese cupping and shiatsu, the spa combines Asian therapies with signature treatments to suit just about any need.
The reception of the spa is located on the third floor of the hotel, and after being greeted at the door by the spa director, my partner and I were led to a fur-draped sofa that looked through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows to the sea where we filled out a questionnaire.
After a hot towel and a cold drink, we were led to the locker rooms on the floor below. The treatment rooms are located down the hall from reception, so you have to head back upstairs through the lobby clad only in a terry cloth robe and disposable knickers.
The treatment rooms are very nice, much what you would expect from any high-end spa - dimly lit and tranquil with soft music playing in the background to lull you into a state of relaxation.
Designed to ease muscle tension, we decided on the oil-based deep-tissue massage (MOP 1,450 + 10% service charge and 5% tax), which also happens to be the most popular item on the vast menu. The therapist started with slow, firm strokes to target lower tissues of the muscles, helping to relieve tension and soreness. Coupled with some deep stretching, I felt like my body had been through an intense yoga session by the end of the treatment, so if you are looking for a relaxing, gentle treatment then a deep-tissue massage is certainly not for you.
Although the massage never caused any pain, there were certainly times when I felt a tad uncomfortable, which the therapist seemed to pick up on and eased up a bit. Throughout the treatment the therapists were attentive, regularly asking if the pressure was suitable, and spent adequate time working out kinks and knots in my stiff back and shoulders. The whole process ended with a soothing scalp massage. After the treatment, guests are invited to enjoy a cup of ginger tea along with fruit in the relaxation room.
The deep-tissue massage is offered in 60- or 90-minute sessions with the option to enjoy the downstairs facilities before or after. Offering hot and cold tropical rain showers, a laconium (a hot-air and/or steam room), a hammam, a snow room and a vitality pool, (complete with air loungers) the ambiance is very earthy and inviting in the locker room. All these facilities mean you can relax even further after a treatment.
The following day my muscles felt a bit sore, which we were told was to be expected from the toxins released by the massage, but on the second day after the treatment I woke up feeling incredibly relaxed and for the first time in months didn’t suffer from lower back soreness after sitting at my desk all day.
Spa treatments are available daily from 10am-4am.
