The heat has arrived in Hong Kong, and traipsing around the city in heavy, synthetic fabrics sounds nothing short of miserable. Light airy fabrics are the order of the day and a perfect alternative for the hot and humid weather.
We’ve picked a few of our favourites from eco-conscience boutique A Boy Named Sue to help keep you cool.
German designer Isabell de Hillerin gives a fresh, clean edge to the pieces of her Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Not only are all of the designs sustainable, but she also works with local manufacturers in Moldova and Romania to support the production of handmade materials. The 100% silk sun dress (US$489) is embroidered by hand in Moldova by local craftswomen. This unlined dress is lightweight and flowy, making it ideal for hot summer days and nights. The silk petal skirt (US$282) comes in coral or gray and is also 100% Moldavian silk. It’s low back and slightly higher front gives it a flirty appeal, while the curved overlap gives it a touch of sophistication.
California-based label Amour Vert proves that style and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. Only organic, sustainable fabrics are used for their designs and they maintain a zero-waste philosophy. The corine peplum top (US$170) in vibrant orange, which they call firecracker, is pure silk. Another light and delicate piece that is perfect for summer, the top features a dainty flounce at the waist and a long, feminine keyhole back.
French brand Bonheur makes ethically, environmentally-friendly clothing by choosing only workshops that respect human rights and international labor standards. Environmentally-friendly factories are also given priority. Bonheur collaborated with Creative Handicrafts (which improves the working conditions of women living in the slums of Bombay by teaching them how to sew) to bring you the oiseaux top (US$375). Made from 100% cotton, this beautiful, feminine top features delicate lace throughout and comes in white and a brilliant bright blue.
Diarte, A Boy Named Sue’s latest Spanish designer, has chosen linen as the focal point of their Spring/Summer 2014 collection. The light, breathable fabric is a godsend to those of us hoping to stay cool this summer. The gray, black and white fatima color block skirt (US$172) is made from a linen cotton blend and has a polished yet playful look about it.
Environmentally friendly and breathable, these clothes give a whole new meaning to green fashion, showing us that beautiful clothes and the environment can happily coexist.
