When I heard that DiVino Patio at Brim 28 was offering an aperitivo, I was instantly transported back to long, lazy evenings spent in Italy, where many restaurants and bars will offer small, free snacks to those having a tipple or two. The aperitif is not designed to replace a meal, but rather to prep the palate for the meal to follow, hence the meaning of the Latin-based verb, “to open”.
Located at Brim 28, DiVino Patio has a beautiful and sophisticated interior with exposed red brick walls, warm lighting, and an open kitchen. The patio has low and high tables as well as lounge style couches on one side. We sat at a high top table located right in the middle of the patio. Unfortunately the smoke from nearby diners was less than appealing, but something that has to be expected when dining al fresco.
Offered daily, from 6:30-8:30pm, DiVino Patio’s aperitivo is quite the spread, and dare I say, one that could even rival the real deal. Located on the outer border of the patio, to entice passers-by I assume, the self-service counter is well stocked with fresh dishes that change daily as per the chef’s whims. There were plenty of dishes on offer, including two types of pizzas, cheese, mushroom crostini, salmon tartare, prosciutto wrapped breadsticks and a pasta dish.
The pizza choices were plain cheese - simple but tasty - and olive and anchovy. Not being a huge fan of anchovy, it wasn’t my cup of tea, but my dining partner loved it. The crust on the pizza was thin and crispy and there was plenty of cheese. Other standout dishes included the mixed mushrooms on top of a crouton which was rich and savory, and the salmon tartare. Thinly sliced salmon accompanied by dill and sour cream served on focaccia bread, a light treat for a summer evening.
When you’ve had your fill of snacks, there is a wide range of pastas, risottos, pizzas and mains to choose from. Remember that sharing is key at DiVino Patio and offers a great opportunity to try a few different dishes. Chef recommendations include Penne “Jerome” style with Gorgonzola and black truffle sauce, artisanal square spaghetti “Cocco” tossed with langoustine and Indian spices and layered maguro tuna tartar and avocado, scented with lime and ginger and served with deep-fried onion rings
With a seemingly endless wine and drink list, deciding your evening glass can be a bit daunting. Thankfully friendly and knowledgeable sommelier Antonello was on hand and very quick to recommend a glass of Ponte Prosecco, which comes from winery Uomini e Vigne, located in his hometown. Crisp and refreshing, it fit the bill perfectly and was a great accompaniment to the salmon.
DiVino Patio is the perfect place to experience a little taste of Italy. Tasty food coupled with a fantastic location is pretty hard to beat.
