Wynn Macau Exterior - Day by Barbara Kraft.jpg

Between the glitz and allure of flashy casino hotels, it's hard to strike a chord that resonates both glamour and class. Teetering on the edge of kitsch, the Wynn manages to pull it off.

Located on the southern tip of the peninsula, the Wynn reaches 100 metres up into the (slightly hazy) Macanese sky. Built in 2006, the hotel is home to over 1,000 rooms and suites. Showy, yet elegant, it is decorated in vibrant warm colours. As you walk into the main lobby you may notice the beautiful ornate vases on show, which hotel chairman and CEO Steve Wynn hand-picked, paying nearly US$12.8 million at a London auction. And this is just the beginning of the opulence that the Wynn has to offer.

The Room

Wynn One Bedroom Suite - Bedroom by Barbara Kraft.jpg

After checking in at Wynn Club reception, the porter showed us to our one-bedroom suite located in Wynn Tower. When he opened the door I couldn't quite believe my eyes. Our tiny Hong Kong apartment could have fit in the foyer alone. At 185 square meters, the suite was tastefully decorated in muted creams and gold, giving the area a very pure and natural vibe, which is just what designer Roger Thomas wanted when he redesigned Wynn Tower at the end of 2013. Each one-bedroom suite includes a massage room, sizeable wet bar, living room and powder room.

As you walk through the bedroom you arrive in the expansive bathroom. A whirlpool tub, separate shower, private toilet, and two walk in closets complete the bathroom of any girl's dreams. I was already fantasizing about taking a nice long bath with a glass of champagne at my side.

The bedroom is no less grand, featuring a king- size bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, remote controlled curtains, and floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping views of Macau. I can safely say that this was the most extravagant boudoir I’ve ever rested my head.

Facilities

Tempting as it was, I was determined not to spend the whole day locked away in my room.

A lovely oasis located in the centre of Wynn Tower, the pool is surrounded by cabanas, plenty of lounge chairs, and a whirlpool. Add beautiful lush gardens into the mix, and you feel as if you’re on a tropical island rather than in the heart of the city.

If that isn’t enough relaxation for you, there is the spa at Wynn Tower. There are plenty of choices on offer, but I decided to try the Cashmere and Silk Awakening treatment (read our review here), which was a light 90-minute massage and a great way to unwind after a grueling day poolside. Next to the spa, overlooking the pool, is a salon if your hair is in need of a little something special.

Also located on the first floor you can find the well-equipped gym. Decked out with the latest cardio and weight machines, there are also yoga mats, hand weights, and kettlebells to help you work off that indulgent meal from the night before. Personal trainers are on hand to help whip you into shape, for a price of course.

Dining

No five-star hotel restaurant is complete without at least one Michelin star. Between the four signature restaurants, Wing Lei (Cantonese), Golden Flower (Tan, Shandong and Sichuan), Mizumi (Japanese) and Ristorante Il Teatro (Italian), there are three.

We chose classic Cantonese restaurant Wing Lei. Between the nearly 10 different dishes we tried, I was impressed with them all. Using only fresh, seasonal ingredients, the chefs add a certain touch of creativity to each delicious delicacy. Read our review here.

If it’s a more casual meal you’re after, there are plenty of options: Red 8 for casual Chinese dishes, 99 Noodles if you're in the mood for hand-pulled or cut noodles, Café Esplanada if you're in the mood for something a bit more international, and Café Encore which specalizes in Chinese cuisine.

The dinner and breakfast buffets at Cafe Esplanada did not disappoint. They featured dishes from all over the world, including a fantastic iced seafood bar for dinner and fresh dim sum for breakfast.

The Wynn seems to have something different from most of the other large luxury hotels in the area. Rather than revolving around one massive gaming hall, there are smaller, intimate "rooms" dotted along either side of the corridor. The lack of a centrally located casino gives it a more personal feel, and the staff seem more friendly and attentive.

At the end of our trip, as we were checking out, the only thing that helped with the onset of my post (mini) vacation depression was the fact that I knew we would be back soon.

Curious how Wynn Encore stacks up to Wynn Tower? Read our review here.
